Angela Thwaites has been working as a self employed professional in the specialist field of kiln formed glass for more than twenty years. She frequently takes part in exhibitions nationally and internationally.
Since graduating with a BA Hons in ceramics and glass from Farnham, Surrey, Thwaites’ focus has been on kiln-formed glass. Her work is visually varied and combines glass with a variety of other materials including metal, stone, and wood.
As well as one-off pieces, Thwaites also created a number of works for specific locations including Gloucester Road Underground Station and the Great Eastern Hotel in London.
Thwaites’ work encompasses exhibitions, commissions, collaborations, and consultations. Recent special projects include large scale casting for sculptor Anya Gallaccio, and consultation on casting a monument for the site of execution at the Tower of London.
In the 1980s The British Council awarded Thwaites four consecutive Scholarships to study MA at the Academy of Applied Art in Prague in the studio of Professor Stansilav Libensky.
Thwaites has extensive experience of teaching over fifteen years in a broad range of environments in the UK and other European countries. At the moment she is a senior lecturer at De Monfort University on the BA 3D Design Crafts course, and continues to teach adult education at Westminster and Richmond.
As part of her professional experience Thwaites held a research post at the Royal College of Art for three years. The research focussed on materials and methods for refractory mould making for kiln-casting glass. This project forms the most comprehensive survey of contemporary practice yet compiled and published titled ‘Mixing with the Best’.
