ARTIST'S BACKGROUND
Richard Wheater was born in 1978 in Yorkshire and has recently returned to live and work here. Initially he trained at Edinburgh College of Art before going on to Alfred University, New York, and the University of Sunderland.
In 2001 he was awarded the ECA Student Scholarship to attend an advance sculpture class with Anthony Corredetti in Seattle. In 2003, he gained an Arts Council of Scotland grant to attend Karren Willenbrink-Johnsens Sculpture course, Lybster and in the following year he gained an Arts Council of England grant to travel to New York to study neon with Matt Dilling.
ARTIST'S STATEMENT
Richard says he enjoys the learning of skills to unlock a materials secret. Yet despite this satisfying journey, his early interest in the process of skill development has always been superseded by a thirst for conveying strong narrative.
Interest in the topical discussions surrounding mankind’s relationship with our environment has dictated his material choice in previous works, namely glass and light. Working with the same materials from which the idea is inspired by, he finds conveys a more powerful and direct response. This thirst for a direct response has also encouraged him to think ideas through performance.
