ARTIST'S STATEMENT
I am currently engaged in two threads of sculptural work, each using different casting methods. Firstly, I am making block casts and altering the pieces, after firing, but before cold working. These alterations involve cutting through cast blocks, which exposes the inner pattern. The marks made by the cutting wheel are maintained in the final pieces. I’m interested in pushing the limits of the medium and am influenced by modernist architecture and design: Mies van der Rohe; Charlotte Perriand; Josef and Anni Albers and by the work of artists such as Mark Rothko and Olga de Amaral. Secondly, influenced by my love of nature and my fascination with things I find whilst walking, I am making lost wax casts of found objects in nature. I am currently casting pieces of wood and I am also starting to incorporate metal elements into my work but (at present these are mainly functional). CONTACT Instagram: starrgglasswork |
ARTIST'S BACKGROUND
I am a mature student. I gained a BA (Hons) in The History of Modern Art and Design at Newcastle upon Tyne Polytechnic in the 1970’s and then worked in the corporate film industry before retiring in 2012. I came to glass through ceramics, which I began to work with immediately post-retirement, taking workshops with, amongst others, Jack Doherty, Rie Tsuruta and Carnia Ciscato. I made ceramic work at classes at Morley Waterloo and at Morley North Kensington.
In 2020 I started to take classes in kiln-formed glass with Maria Zulueta at Morley College North Kensington. In 2022 I took a BTEC Level 3 in Glass and I continue to work/study at the Advanced Glass Workshop at Morley North Kensington.
I have also been working in metal at Morley Pelham Hall since late 2023, to make armatures for my glass work.
