Caroline Raffan

ARTIST'S STATEMENT
I currently work using mainly Bullseye glass.  An admirer of the print makers and painters in the British tradition, I have spent time exploring ways to incorporate painting into kiln formed fused work - not always something easy to achieve!

Some of my family are from the Potteries and my granny was a paintress at Moorcrofts - something that might have contributed to my working with figurative themes, frequently drawing me to flowers, natural themes and recently to still life as a rewarding theme.   Shapes and balance in artwork fascinate me, and the way that a piece can be your partner, suggesting how it should be completed if you give it time to contribute to the process.

ARTIST'S BACKGROUND
My first glass experience was at a Camden stained glass evening class taught by Paul San Casciani. My next was at the City Lit, and then in 2000 I joined the part time PG Professional Certificate course at Central St Martins.

While in London I made some work using recycled float glass, and won a competition organised by Ken Livingstone to make trophies for businesses with environmental awareness.  I showed work with [re]design design, and received commissions for work in recycled float glass through an agency called London Remade.

In 2008 I moved house down to Deal in Kent, and now work from a garden studio.
